Best Betting Apps in South Africa - Tested & Ranked (2026)

Lerato Khumalo ·Betting Strategy Lead ·11 min read ·Updated 7 March 2026

Most "best betting app" lists in South Africa are affiliate-spam ranked by who pays the highest commission. We did the opposite. Over six weeks, we ran R2,000 of our own bankroll through eight SA-licensed apps and graded them on what actually matters: speed, payout time, market depth, line quality, and bonus value after wagering.

Below is the full ranking, what each app does well, and where each one disappoints. Disclosure: we partner with one of these (YesPlay) and earn a commission if you sign up via our link. The ranking is independent of that - read on, you'll see one of our partners didn't take #1.

How we tested

The ranking

1Hollywoodbets9.2 / 10PSL coverage & speed
2YesPlay (our partner)9.0 / 10Welcome bonus & live games
3Betway SA8.8 / 10EPL & UCL line depth
4Supabets8.4 / 10Daily promos
5World Sports Betting8.0 / 10Free bet incentives
6Sunbet7.6 / 10Casino crossover
7Sportingbet SA7.2 / 10Recreational use
8Gbets6.8 / 10Niche markets

1. Hollywoodbets - best overall for SA punters

Hollywoodbets has the deepest PSL market on the SA market - including obscure props like player shots-on-target and team corners. The app is fast (1.4s cold start), withdrawals hit FNB in under 12 hours during our test, and live betting refresh is the snappiest of the eight.

Where it loses points: welcome offer is small (R25 free bet), so for first-time depositors there are better bonus options. Pre-match lines on EPL and UCL are 0.05-0.10 worse than Betway on top games.

2. YesPlay - best welcome bonus & casino integration

Disclosure: YesPlay is our official partner. We still rank it #2, not #1. Where it shines: the welcome offer is the strongest in the market (100% match up to R5,000 + 200 free spins), the casino integration is genuinely useful for diversification, and customer support is the most responsive (4-minute average reply during our test).

Where it loses points: PSL prop market depth is thinner than Hollywoodbets. The pre-match lines on European football are sharp, but live betting odds refresh is 1.5-2 seconds slower than top tier.

3. Betway SA - sharpest pre-match EPL lines

If you bet European football, Betway's pre-match lines are the closest to Pinnacle of any SA app we tested. Average deviation across 50 EPL fixtures was 0.07 - meaningfully better than the field. The app interface feels dated but functions well.

Where it loses points: withdrawals took 22 hours on average - slower than Hollywoodbets and YesPlay. PSL coverage is solid but not deep.

4. Supabets - best daily promotions

Supabets runs the most consistent daily promo schedule of any SA app. Boosted odds, money-back specials, free bet refunds. If you're an active bettor placing 5+ bets daily, the cumulative promo value beats higher welcome bonuses elsewhere.

Where it loses points: live betting interface is cluttered. Customer support response time was the slowest of the top five (24-hour average reply).

5-8: Honourable mentions

World Sports Betting, Sunbet, Sportingbet SA and Gbets all serve their niches. WSB is great if you load up on free bets. Sunbet integrates well with Sun International casinos for cross-over players. Sportingbet SA has good UI but limited markets. Gbets is fine for niche events but you'll find better lines elsewhere.

The metric most lists ignore: payout speed

This is the single biggest differentiator most affiliate sites bury. We measured time from withdrawal request to funds in bank account. Anything over 24 hours is a red flag in 2026 - instant ZAR processing exists, and the books that don't offer it are leaning on float.

What you should actually optimise for

Don't chase the biggest welcome bonus. Chase line quality across the matches you bet most. If you bet 80% PSL, Hollywoodbets makes you the most money. If you bet EPL/UCL, Betway is sharper. If you mix sportsbook and casino, YesPlay's combined value through our link is highest.

Two-app strategy (what we recommend)

Run two accounts. Most successful SA bettors we know use:

  1. One sharp app for line quality on your main markets (Betway for EPL, Hollywoodbets for PSL)
  2. One bonus app for promos and welcome value (YesPlay through our link, Supabets for daily promos)

Compare odds before every bet. The 0.05-0.10 difference adds up to thousands of rand a year on serious volume.

FAQ

Are these apps legal in South Africa?

Every app in this ranking is licensed by the South African National Gambling Board. Avoid offshore-only apps without an SA licence - withdrawal disputes are unwinnable.

How old do I need to be to bet?

18+ in South Africa. KYC verification (FICA) is required before withdrawals.

Can I have accounts at multiple SA bookies?

Yes, and you should. There's no rule against it, and line shopping is the single biggest free upgrade to your win rate.

Do welcome bonuses come with strings?

Always. Read the wagering requirements before depositing. Most SA welcome bonuses require 5x-10x rollover at minimum 1.50 odds. Calculate the expected value, not the headline number.
